Napoleon Bonaparte is perhaps the single most contributing person to the history of Champagne. Napoleon's connection to champagne began back in 1782 where he met Jean-Rémy Moët the grandson of Claude Moët. Their relation played a significant role in the love Napoleon built for Champagne. Napoleon made it a ritual to visit the house of Moët & Chandon before every military campaign to collect cases of Champagne. Because as Napoleon famously said: "In victory, you deserve champagne. In defeat you need it."
